Heater Replacement

Air Solutions | Wednesday, November 14, 2018

Your heater may have reached the end of its life, so you think it may be time to upgrade to a more energy-efficient model. Air Solutions of Corpus Christi can help you find the best system for your home or place of business, but you may not know if you really need a new heater.

Here are some ways that you can figure out if your heater is ready to give up:

  • You need to do more frequent repairs.

  • Your family or co-workers are frequently getting ill.

  • Your skin is dry from lack of moisture in the air.

  • The air is dusty or dirty.

  • You have problems with humidity.

Aside from all these factors, you have to consider the lifespan of your unit. If it’s more than 15 years old, you’ll start to have more maintenance issues. And it’s more likely that it will need to be replaced.

There’s a good rule of thumb that can help you determine if you need a heater replacement. If the cost to repair it is more than half of what it would be to a new one, you should replace it. But even if your heating unit is more than 15 years old, it may have some time before it goes out. Most reliable furnaces can last 20-30 years if they’re properly maintained, and you can find the recommended lifespan of your unit by looking in the owner’s manual or calling the manufacturer with the appropriate model number.

Older units may start to spit out dust, dirt, or rust particles. And all of them can be hazardous to your health. If you’re experiencing this problem, it’s a sign of too much carbon dioxide. It can cause the air to become too dry, which can affect the walls, wood flooring, furniture, and plants inside your home. If any of these things are occurring or if people complain about having dry eyes and itchy throats, it may be time for a heater replacement.

Your heater may need to be replaced if you hear any of the following noises:

  • Rattling – May be caused by unsecured ductwork, loose screws, or sheet metal. It could also mean that the lower motor isn’t properly balanced.
  • Popping – When parts of your heater change temperature in response to the same fluctuations in your entire unit.
  • Humming – A sign that your fan or inducer motor is starting to fail.
  • Screeching or Squealing – A sign that there’s an issue with your fan or inducer motor, which can be a loose bearing, a worn belt, or a problem with the belt’s pulley system.

All of these warning signs are indications that it could cost more to repair it than to replace it.
